The environment is part of the workout
A treadmill makes speed, incline, and duration easy to control. A trail asks different questions. Grade changes without permission. Footing demands attention. Descents create their own fatigue. The same pace can represent completely different effort from one minute to the next.
That made heart rate, breathing, and perceived effort more useful than pace alone. The mission was not to force a road-running number onto a trail. It was to sustain the intended aerobic effort across changing terrain.
Walking is a tool
The most useful lesson was that walking a climb is not failure. When it protects the intended energy system, preserves form, and prevents an early spike that ruins the rest of the session, walking is disciplined execution.
Project Spartan Ultra will reward the athlete who can keep making useful decisions long after excitement fades. Training that judgment starts now.
Capture what the gym cannot
Trail runs and hikes now enter Atlas through Apple Health because Hevy is not the right execution layer for them. Duration, distance, elevation, heart-rate context, and the linked assessment belong beside strength evidence without pretending they are the same kind of load.
The session changed the system because the system is supposed to learn from execution. That is ShaOS working as intended.
