Description

A step-back lunge that develops single-leg strength and deceleration while allowing the athlete to control stride length and balance.

Setup & Execution

  1. Stand tall with the feet about hip width and enough clear space behind you.
  2. Step one foot backward and land softly on the ball of that foot while keeping the front foot planted.
  3. Lower the rear knee toward the floor with the front knee tracking in line with the toes.
  4. Drive through the front foot to return to standing, regain balance, and then repeat or change sides.

Coaching Cues

  • Step back on train tracks.
  • Keep the front foot heavy.
  • Return under control before the next rep.

Common Mistakes

  • Stepping directly behind the front foot and losing balance.
  • Pushing mostly from the rear toes.
  • Rushing the return to standing.
