Phase: I — Build the Engine

Mission: Develop upper-body strength, pulling power, grip endurance, and shoulder durability while preserving energy for long-term Spartan Ultra preparation.

Estimated Duration: 75–90 minutes

Primary Energy System: Strength

Difficulty: Intermediate

Recovery Priority: Moderate

Document Version: v1.0.0

Mission Brief

Today's objective is simple.

Build a stronger upper body without sacrificing recovery.

Every pull strengthens your ability to climb.

Every press builds resilience.

Every rep contributes to becoming a more capable hybrid athlete.

Quality beats quantity.

Leave the gym stronger than you arrived.

Today's Reminder

Lift with discipline.

Leave one rep behind.

Why This Matters for Spartan

Success in a Spartan Ultra isn't determined by how much you can bench press.

It's determined by your ability to repeatedly pull, climb, carry, crawl, push, and stabilize your body after hours of movement.

FORGE develops the upper-body qualities that make those challenges possible.

Today's session improves:

  • Pulling strength for rope climbs, monkey bars, and multi-rig obstacles
  • Pressing strength for walls, carries, and obstacle efficiency
  • Grip endurance for ropes, sandbags, buckets, and carries
  • Shoulder stability for long-term durability
  • Upper-back strength for posture during long efforts
  • Core engagement for efficient force transfer

Every pull builds confidence.

Every press builds resilience.

Every carry strengthens your resolve.

Today's workout isn't simply about building a stronger upper body.

It's about building an athlete who can continue performing when fatigue arrives.

Mission Objectives

Today's mission is successful if you:

  • Complete every compound lift with excellent technique.
  • Leave 1–2 reps in reserve on primary lifts.
  • Finish the grip finisher with excellent form.
  • Leave the gym feeling stronger—not exhausted.
  • Complete the cooldown and recovery protocol.

Coach's Challenge

Leave one perfect repetition in the tank.

Do not chase failure.

Do not chase ego.

Build strength you can repeat week after week.

The discipline to stop one repetition early is what allows you to train consistently for months.

Consistency builds champions.

Identity Principle

I choose disciplined strength over reckless effort.

Every controlled repetition reinforces the athlete I am becoming.
